Exploring the main difference between traditional surrogacy and gestational surrogacy
Traditional surrogacy and gestational surrogacy are two different ways that you can become a parent. The main difference between these types of surrogacy is who provides the eggs.
With traditional surrogacy, the woman who will carry the pregnancy provides the eggs. She is technically the biological mother of the child, which can create legal complications.
In contrast, gestational surrogacy uses donor eggs from a different woman. As a result, a gestational surrogate has no biological or genetic link to the baby. This is the type of surrogacy that we provide at our Las Vegas surrogacy center.
Other difference between the two types of surrogacy
Traditional surrogacy may seem like a simpler option. After all, you don’t need to find an egg donor. The surrogate can also conceive using intrauterine insemination (IUI), rather than in vitro fertilization (IVF).
However, our Las Vegas surrogacy center and many others around the United States favor gestational surrogacy for several reasons.
- Legal considerations. Nevada and other states do not have laws permitting traditional surrogacy because it presents many issues. In states that do allow it, the surrogate will need to legally terminate her parental rights after giving birth. The non-biological parents may also need to complete a stepparent adoption to gain parental rights.
- Length of wait. Because most surrogacy professionals only focus on gestational surrogacy, it can take much longer to begin traditional surrogacy. You will need to find a surrogacy agency and fertility doctors who are willing to complete the family-building process using this option.
- Emotional risks. Traditional surrogacy doesn’t just create legal risks, it also creates emotional ones. When the surrogate is the biological mother of the baby, it may be more difficult for her to give the child to the hopeful parents. This could result in a lengthy and costly legal battle for all parties.
